With many of the motors that We use (including the one SparkFun sells) the resistance of the motor self-limits the current, and so you have to turn DOWN the current limit pot in order to get good microstepping.
A while ago We sent in an order to Sparkfun to give them a shot. I've ordered electronic bits from a few places, but being in Canada makes shipping a challenge. We have to find places willing to ship via USPS to avoid a $40 brokerage fee
